Face Lift & Mini Facelift

As the years pass by, the face tends to look less vibrant, tired, and, eventually, older.

  • Are there deep folds around your nose and mouth?
  • Is there a relaxation of the lower face?
  • Or is there loose skin and fatty deposits under the jaw that
make you appear to be aging or tired?

If you’ve been thinking about how you can restore your youthful appearance, then it’s time to discuss with plastic surgeon Dr. Boemi in Naples, Florida what a facelift can do to for you.

A facelift (rhytidectomy) is a surgical procedure that will improve visible signs of aging in the lower face and neck. A facelift corrects sagging facial skin and muscles and restores firmness to create a more rested and vibrant appearance.

Many patients are concerned that they will have a “plastic” ("pulled" or “windblown") look after surgery.

In order to avoid this undesirable result, Dr. Boemi asks his patients to bring in a picture of themselves a few years earlier at the time of the consultation. A snapshot is better than a studio quality image. This will help the surgeon plan the procedure and avoid an unnatural look.

Often, no one can tell that you have had a facelift, yet you can look years younger. The average facelift done today lasts about seven to ten years. Follow-up procedures can be performed to keep you looking as good as you can for many more years.

A consultation with Dr. Boemi is the first step to learn how a facelift can improve facial sagging and aging. The best candidates for facelift surgery are women and men whose face and neck still have good skin elasticity, as well as those with strong and well-defined bone structure.

Facelift incisions generally begin in or at the hairline at the temples, continue around the ear, and end in the lower posterior scalp, or just in front of it. The skin is undermined. The underlying tissue (SMAS or superficial musculo-aponeurotic system) is repositioned, skin is re-draped over the uplifted contours, and the excess is trimmed away.

The main difference between a full facelift and a mini facelift is the extension of the incisions. In a mini facelift the incision will not extend behind the ears. A mini facelift is still quite effective in improving the jaw line and the cheek profile, but it is not designed to improve the neck to a significant degree.

At times, during a full facelift, Dr. Boemi may need to make a second incision under the chin to improve an aging neckline. The incisions will then be closed using sutures.

Facelifts can be combined with endoscopic face rejuvenating procedures. The combined procedure is quite effective in providing a rejuvenation of the whole face and neck, and it is called a “multiplanar facelift”.

Facelifts are usually performed in a fully accredited ambulatory surgery center, under general or local anesthesia. Mini facelifts, in selected individuals, can be performed in the office under local anesthesia.

There will be bruising and swelling after the procedure, along with numbness and discomfort that can be controlled with medication. The bruising usually fades within three or four weeks, and after a few days patients are permitted to wear camouflage makeup. Most people are able to attend social events within four weeks, even though the healing process will continue for several weeks as the swelling lessens and the incision lines begin to fade.
