Dermabrasion

This is a time proven technique designed to improve wrinkles around the mouth or between the eyebrows that are caused by the repetitive action of the underlying facial muscles or by extensive sun damage.
It consists of the smoothening of the wrinkles using either a sanding wheel or a wire brush. The most recent instruments use diamond sharpening technology, which has improved control and accuracy. This technique can be as effective as laser resurfacing in selected areas, such as the area around the mouth and that between the brows. Unlike laser resurfacing, however, dermabrasion cannot be used in areas where the skin is thin, due to the relatively high incidence of scarring.

The procedure is usually performed in combination with some type of facial rejuvenating procedure in a fully accredited ambulatory surgery center. In selected patients, and for selected goals, it can be performed in the office under local anesthesia.

There will be swelling, oozing and crusting over the treated area for 10 to 15 days over the treated area. This process will then yield to redness, which can last anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks. The redness, which is an expression of healing and new connective tissue formation, can be covered with make-up. Patients are advised to avoid sun exposure as long as the treated area is red.

The results can be as good as those expected after laser resurfacing, and maintenance treatments, such as Botox® Cosmetics or chemical peels can help maintain a smooth appearance of the lips and/or the glabella.
